Water heater removal and disposal is exactly what it sounds like – safely disconnecting and hauling away an old water heater, whether it's part of a new installation or a standalone job because you've got a dead unit taking up space. This isn't just dragging a tank to the curb – proper removal means safely draining and disconnecting water, gas, or electrical connections first, and responsible disposal means the unit is recycled or disposed of correctly rather than just dumped.
You need this when you've got an old water heater that's no longer in use and needs to go, when a new installation leaves an old unit behind that needs proper disposal, or when you're renovating a space and need a non-functional unit cleared out. Water heaters are heavy, can still have water and sediment inside even when disconnected, and often have gas or electrical connections that shouldn't be handled without knowing what you're doing.
We start by shutting off water, gas, or electrical supply to the unit if it hasn't already been disconnected, then safely draining any remaining water from the tank before moving it, since a full tank is significantly heavier and draining prevents water damage during removal. Once drained and disconnected, we remove the unit from the property and take it to be recycled or disposed of properly – most of a water heater's steel components are recyclable, which is the responsible way to handle disposal rather than sending it straight to a landfill.
Cost depends on accessibility – a unit in a basement or tight utility closet takes more effort to remove than one in a garage, and whether it still needs to be drained first or is already empty. Properties in Cannon Afb, NM with units in hard-to-access spots like attics or crawlspaces typically see higher removal costs due to the extra labor involved.
